New York Knicks Launch All-Stars Basketball Tournament with Foundation
On Friday, March 28, the New York Knicks and the Garden of Dreams Foundation teamed up to host the first-ever one day All-Stars Basketball Tournament at the MSG Training Facility. The tournament hosted 40 middle school aged children from Foundation partner, Children’s Aid Society Frederick Douglass Center, for friendly round robin play.
Energized for an afternoon of basketball, the children were quickly split into four teams and met their special guest coaches including Knicks alumni Buck Williams, Felipe Lopez and Cal Ramsey, Liberty alumnus Kym Hampton, current Liberty player Essence Carson and Knicks City Dancers who helped to cheer on the kids. Each coach distributed team tee shirts to their players, came up with a team name and strategized with offensive and defensive plays. As the clock began, the side-by-side Knicks and Liberty practice courts lit up with passes, shot, sideline cheers and even a half court shot to win the game! The children sprinted up and down the court with their minds set on scoring baskets and having fun.
“This is a chance of a lifetime for these kids. Some of them only play in the playground, this is a real treat,” said a coach from the Frederick Douglass Center.
As the round robin play buzzer sounded, the teams shook hands and headed to center court for a group photo with their coaches followed by an All-Stars Basketball Tournament awards ceremony dressing each child with a medal and gift bag.
